One of the few unspoilt places left for responsible travelers to visit.
Dawki
Traveling from Shillong to the international trade route border town of Dawki is a splendid drive of 95 kilometers passing through deep gorges and ravines, which is certainly a thrilling experience.
On approaching Dawki is the Umngot River, the venue of the annual boat race held during March – April at Umsyiem. The Umngot River is the natural boundary between Ripner or Jaintia Hills with Hima Khyrim of Khasi Hills over which a single span suspension bridge was constructed.
This is the gateway to Bangladesh where major export and import transactions take place.

To Reach
By Air – Nearest Major airport is Guwahati at a distance of nearly 200 kilometers, direct flights available from Kolkata, Delhi, Bagdogra and Bangkok. The nearest airport is at Umroi, nearly 35 kilometers from Shillong and nearly 120 kilometers from Dawki, which connects this lovely city by air with the rest of the country. There is a helicopter service from Guwahati Airport to Shillong and Shillong to Tura.
By Air – Bangladesh – It is not easy to enter from Bangladesh due to political / diplomatic reason. One can reach Mawsynram may enter India via Dawki Land port with Bangladesh. From Osmani International Airport, Sylhet connected to Zia International Airport, Dhaka and Shah Amanat International Airport, Chittagong, tourists can reach Tamabil border (on the Indian side is Dawki) in just 60 minutes drive along 52 kilometers smooth, metalled highway
By Rail – There are no rail lines in Meghalaya. The nearest major railhead is at Guwahati, which is at a distance of nearly 200 kilometers. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of the country by broad gauge rail, road and airways.
By Road – It is 96 kilometers from Shillong, a border town. Nearly 150 kilometers from Guwahati is this tourist spot called Dawki. The roads are good as there is rush of tourist. Most of the tourist spot of Meghalaya lies in this region. Private vehicles are available.
