Bikini Beans Espresso might be the only coffee shop in Arizona where you can get your coffee from a barista in a bikini.
Though many agree with him and laud his message, others believe that if the women who have chosen to work there are happy with their decision, it’s no one else’s business to declare the store sexist.
That being, at a fundamental level, I do not agree with the objectification of women I’m a fan of the female body.
The shop’s message, according to its site, is to “empower and inspire everyone to live life to the fullest — one coffee at a time.” Tempe City Councilman Kolby Granville disagrees with the store’s fundamental message and he wrote a passionate (and now viral) rant about it on Facebook on Nov. 8.
After mentioning that he respects the free market and people’s decisions to open businesses, he announces that he “HATE[S]” this coffee shop. He hates it because he has “spent the last 3 years coaching Jr. High Girl’s Cross Country telling young girls they can be fierce competitive humans and yet they are going to see your shop and be told their greatest value is as an object of desire.”
He will not only not be a customer, he writes, but he will “happily help you pack up and leave Tempe when you go out of business. You fill me with actual hate for what you are doing.”
His comments have sparked major debate in the comment section. Though many agree with him and laud his message, others believe that if the women who have chosen to work there are happy with their decision, it’s no one else’s business to declare the store sexist.
Several others mentioned Bikini Beans is essentially no different than Hooters (which Granville did not make any comparison to in his original Facebook post):
As Granville was approached by more media outlets, he released a statement further clarifying his original comments: “My initial reaction [of anger] has worn off, but the basic idea remains. That being, at a fundamental level, I do not agree with the objectification of women … I’m a fan of the female body. I’m just not a fan of telling women that’s their most useful trait to society.”
Right! Me too. And I’m so happy you feel that way. But you’ve got to keep in mind that it was each of these women’s decision to work at a place where she’d be serving coffee in a bikini all day and that she is allowed to do whatever she wants with that female body of hers. I mean, as long as she wears an apron while she’s brewing coffee? That shit is hot and everyone should be careful.
