This summer an infographic went viral for illustrating the effects a can of Coke has on the body in an hour from spiking blood sugar to cueing a bathroom run and the details were a little distressing.
Now we have information about energy drinks and the impact they hit you within just 30 minutes. Less surprisingly, caffeine and glucose levels jumped as well. While this is slightly unsettling, researchers note that more work needs to be done.
According to a new study by the Mayo Clinic, energy drinks—which are insanely popular among pro athletes, extreme sports enthusiasts, and procrastinating college students worldwide—cause dramatic spikes in blood pressure and norepinephrine, a stress hormone that’s key in decision making in dangerous situations and puts you in a “fight or flight”mindset.
The study tested 25 participants with an average age of 29 and found that after drinking just 16 ounces of Rockstar, their blood pressure spiked by an average of 6.4 percent and norepinephrine sky-rocketed by 73 percent. Less surprisingly, caffeine and glucose levels jumped as well.
While this is slightly unsettling, researchers note that more work needs to be done. Because of the small sample size and single brand tested, further research is required to draw larger conclusions and pinpoint “whether the acute changes are likely to increase cardiovascular risk.
“So basically that means the final results could be even worse. Maybe think about your heart before you order your next vodka Red Bull at the bar (and order a coffee cocktail instead).
