Based on real events, the Kray brothers were British gangsters who tormented London business owners in the 1950s and 60s. Directed and written by Brian Helgeland and also starring Emily Browning. Opens wide release October 2.The Danish Girl
The true story of Danish painter Einer Wegener, the first woman to undergo transgender surgery in 1931. Played by Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking last year, it is a particularly timely movie in the age of Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner. Opens November 27.Sicario
Hitman in Spanish, Sicario stars Emily Blunt, the unlikely but gritty new female action hero for our time as an FBI agent working with the CIA on a drug sting that isnt always above-board. Also starring Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. Opens September 18, limited release; September 25 wide release.Spectre
The names Bond, James Bond. This time our dashing hero, played by Daniel Craig – and maybe someday before hes too old, Idris Elba…#swoon – has gone totally rogue, meeting up with the widow of a man hes assassinated (Monica Bellucci, the first age-appropriate Bond Girl in history). Also featured: fancy cars, tuxedos, glamorous locations, car chases and fabulous gowns. Its a Bond movie, after all. Opens November 6.The Hateful Eight
He’s baaaack! Quentin Tarantino, that is. Set in post-Civil War Wyoming, Tarantinos eighth full-length film stars Samuel L. Jackson as former union soldier who has become a bounty hunter. He ends up trapped in a blizzard with a gang of other mountaineers, bounty hunters, and bad boys (and one female murderer). The Western stars several Tarantino regulars, including Tim Roth and Michael Madsen, along with a few Tarantino newcomers, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Channing Tatum, Kurt Russell, and Bruce Dern. Matt Damon stars as the title character in a movie with a tag line, Help is only 140 million miles away. No, hes not a little green man. He’s just the first and only human to make it to Mars alive; his crew leaves him behind, thinking him for dead. Sending dispatches chronicling his efforts to keep on living, this Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi has a jolt of humor to go with its existential angst. Also starring Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara and Michael Pea. Opens October 2.The Hunger Games – Mockingjay – Part 2
The final installment of the series starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, the heroine who gets revenge on President Snow (Donald Sutherland), aiding in the uprising of the people. Opens November 20.Star Wars – The Force Reawakens
J.J. Abrams, one of the minds behind Lost, and the auteur who took over the Star Trek franchise, is having a go at George Lucass Star Wars, picking up 30 years after Return of the Jedi. Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo are back, and (so are Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford). Added to the mix are a bevy of fresh young faces and new villains. Also: Chewbacca! This fish-out-of-water tale stars a dapper Robert DeNiro as a retired businessman and widower who decides to intern at a tech fashion company spearheaded by a young woman played by Anne Hathaway. A platonic pairing and odd friendship ensues, as the intern imparts his wisdom to the boss. Opens September 25.Crimson Peak
This isnt your mommas haunted house movie. This is a haunted house movie directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain, and critically acclaimed actors Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. Top-notch supernatural scares abound. Opens October 9.Pan
A retelling of the classic tale of Peter Pan, the story has been reimagined by director Joe White to be even more otherworldly than the fairy tale; flying pirate ships, a trippier captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund), and pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman), and casts Rooney Mara (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) against type.
